The Cabildo of Lanzarote has acquired the 70 homes in the Valterra neighborhood in Arrecife. In this way, the highest island body affirms that "it has fulfilled the historical commitment acquired with the legitimate owners" of said houses.
In the last Island Government Council, the body accepted the donation from the Social Institute of the Navy. The transfer will become firm "in a few days", when the president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, signs the public deed of the properties.
The Cabildo of Lanzarote has accepted the donation made last week "only" to continue the administrative procedure that will end with the transfer of ownership of the donated furniture "to those who accredit their status as legitimate owners", the institution reported in a note.
Therefore, the 70 homes will not be definitively integrated as part of the corporation's assets.
President María Dolores Corujo has pointed out that this transaction “has been possible thanks to complex inter-administrative work, which also demonstrates that this Government group is capable of reaching agreements that were previously blocked due to a lack of vision.”
In addition, Corujo insisted that those interested have been kept informed at all times “because we know that they have been in uncertainty for many years. We made a commitment to the families of this seafaring neighborhood and we have fulfilled it,” declared the island president.
She also referred to the contribution in this matter of the senator for Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Manuel Fajardo, who contributed to unblocking the “unfair and outrageous” situation that these residents were suffering “after the PP was unable to assume its responsibility.”
With the mandatory reports
Once the deed of the properties has been signed, the Cabildo of Lanzarote has indicated that it will begin the procedures to be able to transfer ownership of the same "to its legitimate owners" and thus register it in their name in the Property Registry of Arrecife.
The acceptance of the donation approved in the Government Council of the Cabildo includes the notarial proposal for a public deed of donation made by the Social Institute of the Navy and notified to the Cabildo.
The Cabildo has indicated that the file also includes the favorable report from the Legal Service of the Social Institute of the Navy (dated February 24, 2023); and the report from the Legal Advice of the Cabildo (dated March 9, 2023) is included; and the report of conformity of the Intervention of Funds (dated March 17, 2023).
“With the acceptance of the donation we are only moving forward to provide a full response to a historical demand of the people who legitimately own these homes,” concluded the president.
It should be remembered that the Valterra neighborhood has 200 homes built in 1955 by the Social Institute of the Navy, with the participation of various canneries and for the use of workers as official protection homes.
However, although the State handed over 130 to the tenants, a lawsuit was initiated over the other 70 when the three canneries claimed ownership, so that, until now, the residents have lived in fear of being evicted and without being able to intervene in them as their legal rights are not recognized.
