The Cabildo of Lanzarote has concluded the installation of a new roof in the Structural Complex I of the Archaeological Site of Zonzamas, whose objective is "to improve the conservation and protection of the remains that the area houses".
The Councilor for Heritage, Ariagona González, highlighted the importance of this action for the protection of the island's history. “Our heritage is our identity and part of the work that must be done for its conservation is the maintenance of the infrastructures that protect it,” González said.
“During that winter, significant rains fell on the site and the greenhouse cover was unable to evacuate the water. As a result of these events, the greenhouse cover was modified, making it more pronounced and accentuating the slope to facilitate the evacuation of rainwater,” the councilor detailed.
In that sense, the Cabildo points out that the solution adopted will guarantee "that no water enters either during rain or dew", these being evacuated correctly without affecting the archaeological remains. In addition, it also achieves "an infrastructure capable of guaranteeing protection for at least two years", and in this way it also guarantees "an alternative to the pillars that supported the roof, which is not intrusive in the archaeological packages and is stable enough not to be displaced by episodes of strong winds, and improve the ventilation of the enclosure".
In this way, the Corporation details that the roof is replaced by a new one "with a more resistant material and with a greater slope in order to avoid the formation of bags when heavy rains fall", and that also "an alternative pillar system is installed on which the roof is supported, so that the aforementioned damage to the site does not occur".
