The Cabildo of Lanzarote has signed an agreement through which it will invest 968,727.88 euros in the restoration of the volcanic cones of the Los Volcanes Natural Park.
The objective of this project is "the recovery of the ecosystem of this space that constitutes a sample of the main natural systems and characteristic habitats of the Canary Islands", through actions that will aim at "the restoration of vulnerable habitats, as well as those that are in an unfavorable state of conservation or those whose lands are partially degraded."
Oswaldo Betancort pointed out the need for this initiative for "the protection and regeneration of the landscape, biodiversity and different natural spaces that are fundamental for Lanzarote, for the environment and for the conservation of the Island's history."
Likewise, the Minister of the Environment, Samuel Martín, highlighted that the actions to be carried out “will cover an area of about 465 hectares, although the surface area may vary depending on the priorities established in the project.” He also detailed that this includes areas such as Caldera El Cuervo, Caldera Colorada, Caldera Blanca, La Caldereta, Montaña Ortiz, El Señalo, La Rilla, Pico Partido, El Golfo, Montaña Bermeja or Tingafa.
“They will cover an area of about 465 hectares, including areas such as Caldera El Cuervo, El Golfo, Montaña Bermeja or Tingafa, among others"
“Taking into account the existing damages to the ecosystems of this Natural Park, it is necessary to carry out work for the conservation of the ecosystems of several volcanoes or geological landmarks of Lanzarote”, added the councilor.
Among the actions planned in these places, the "elimination of roads stands out, a measure aimed at correcting the impact of footprints and transit; the installation of deterrent barriers that prevent passage through unauthorized areas; the correction of profiles modified by actions carried out by humans in those places where it is necessary; the cleaning and restoration of degraded areas; the installation of informative deterrent signage, informing about the sanctioning regime, and the control of exotic invasive species and restoration with potential species of the scope of action."
The project will be carried out by the public company Tragsa, which will have a budget of 968,727.88 euros and an execution period of "two months" for the drafting of the technical project, and another "ten months" for the execution of the works.
