The Cabildo of Lanzarote and Ecoembes, the environmental organization that coordinates packaging recycling throughout Spain, together with the Government of the Canary Islands and FACYRE (Federation of Associations of Chefs and Pastry Chefs of Spain), in collaboration with the City Councils of Arrecife, Haría, San Bartolomé and Tinajo, continue with the campaign to provide hoteliers with tools that facilitate recycling within their establishments.
This project already started in Lanzarote in 2022, with a first phase in which more than 150 establishments located in Teguise, La Graciosa, Tías and Yaiza joined. On this occasion, the second phase of the campaign will tour the municipalities of Arrecife, Haría, San Bartolomé and Tinajo, "with the aim of reaching 175 more adhesions, thus reaching all the municipalities on the island".
Visits to establishments began on Monday, March 13 in Arrecife and will continue throughout the month of March through the different municipalities participating in this edition. During the visits, an environmental educator will offer the hoteliers of Conejero the possibility of joining the 'Ecohostelero' project, which aims for the restaurant sector to promote the circular economy by giving packaging a second life, while promoting responsible consumption.
To this end, 120-liter buckets and 90-liter bins will be offered completely free of charge to correctly manage their plastic, can, and brick packaging waste. Likewise, 'Ecohostelero' has an online platform with updated content, materials and news to help hoteliers in terms of sustainability. In this support, they will be able to access free training and resources to learn how to separate waste, avoid food waste and correctly manage their resources, among others.
More than 24,000 establishments already have the 'Ecohostelero' seal throughout the country. An insignia that welcomes customers when they enter the premises under the message "no credit is given here, but we do recycle", showing their concern in terms of recycling, reducing food waste or the sustainable management of resources.
This Wednesday, the Minister of Waste of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Hugo Delgado, accompanied by representatives of Ecoembes, visited one of the establishments to see first-hand the action of the environmental educators and support the project.
"We encourage establishments to join this initiative and implement effective and sustainable recycling practices, helping to protect our environment, a task in which we must all contribute our grain of sand," Delgado said.
For his part, Juan Carlos Arranz, manager of Ecoembes for the Canary Islands, highlighted that "this project is possible thanks to the continuous collaboration of the Island Council of Waste of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the different City Councils with Ecoembes, which translates into an improvement in recycling levels in Lanzarote."
"Society is increasingly demanding more social responsibility in all areas of the environment and, in the hotel industry, it is no exception. Actions such as saving water, separating packaging for later recycling or the fight against food waste are sustainable practices that hoteliers have been incorporating in recent years," the organization says.
This project is part of the Canarias Circular Plan, an initiative developed by Ecoembes together with the Ministry of Ecological Transition of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Island Councils and the Canary Federation of Municipalities, with the aim of improving the selective collection and recovery of light packaging and paper and cardboard waste in the Canary Islands, with criteria of social acceptance, technical efficiency and environmental and economic viability, in line with regional and European regulations in this area.
