The Island Board formed by the Cabildo and the seven town councils of the island has shown its "rejection and repudiation" of the "attempt of interference and destabilization led by the Canarian Coalition against the decisions of this institutional body". From the Cabildo they also point out that this rejection has been shown in a "unanimous" way, including the three public officials of CC who have participated in the meeting on behalf of the town councils governed by this party.
The statement responds to the press release sent on Thursday night by the island leadership of the Canarian Coalition, in which it announced that its representatives on the Island Board would ask this Friday that "the rule established by the General Public Directorate for Phase 2 be strictly complied with and that the attendance of the public to sports facilities with a capacity of 25% be allowed". Even, they advanced that "regardless" of what was decided, the town councils where CC holds the Mayor's Office would open the facilities.
However, according to attendees at the meeting told La Voz, neither the mayor of Teguise, nor the mayor of Haría, nor the councilor who attended on behalf of the mayor of Tinajo even defended that position at the meeting. And when it was proposed to issue a note condemning that attitude of CC, none opposed. "They have approved it by assent," say the same sources.
"It is regrettable that they have tried to break the harmony"
"It is very sad that they have tried to attack or cast doubt on the local authorities, who have put the interests of Lanzarote and the people of Lanzarote before other personal considerations, and who have adopted the best possible decisions with the sole objective of saving lives. It is really regrettable that the nationalists have been able to try to break the existing harmony at a time when the only important thing is to be united to face a situation that has jeopardized our way of life", said the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and coordinator of the Island Board, María Dolores Corujo.
"The decisions taken by the Island Board are not personal whims of any of its members, nor the result of chance. They are, on the contrary, the product of responsibility, the permanent advice of the health authorities, the enriching debate, the general interest and the participation and consensus that the Canarian Coalition has tried to break, with its usual ways of doing and understanding politics", added Corujo.
In addition, she recalled that the Presidency of the Cabildo of Lanzarote exercises, "only, the coordination" of the Island Board, "an institutional body participated by the mayoresses and mayors of the island in which consensual decisions of municipal scope are studied, analyzed, debated and adopted".
In fact, the decisions of this body are not binding, and any town council can adopt the measures it deems most appropriate in its municipality. The spirit with which the board was created is to act in a coordinated manner on the island in the face of the pandemic, to jointly decide how to act on matters that are of municipal or island competence, but are not mandatory.
Decision postponed until after Easter
Regarding the municipal sports facilities, what has been unanimously approved has been "to postpone a new meeting after the Easter holidays to analyze the state of epidemiological values on the island" and analyze both "the possibility of reopening" those that remain closed and authorizing public access to those that are already operating to host official competitions.
In this regard, the Cabildo recalls that this will require "a Contingency Plan to prevent infections and disinfect the facilities, which will involve an economic cost and human resources that each town council must study".
