The Teguise City Council has closed the year with the granting of 44 new municipal driver permits and the official updating of tariffs, a historic demand from the sector that has already been approved by the Government of the Canary Islands.
The mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque, has highlighted that "the reinforcement of the public taxi service constitutes a strategic action to improve mobility and quality of life in the municipality". In this regard, she has pointed out that "the granting of new permits and the updating of fares allow for a more accessible, safe, and demand-adapted service, while also recognizing the essential role that the taxi sector plays as a public service and as a fundamental part of the local economy".
The aptitude tests for obtaining the permits were held in two sessions, on June 6 and November 28, with a total of 72 people registered, of whom 44 candidates passed. This expansion will improve service coverage, strengthen its availability, and offer greater guarantees to both users and professionals in the sector.
The increase in permits will contribute to reducing waiting times, reinforcing mobility during periods of high tourist demand and the celebration of events, improving coverage in all towns in the municipality, and facilitating new job opportunities within a regulated sector.
The Councilor for Transport, Francisco Javier Díaz Gil, has stated that "this boost to the taxi sector responds to prior planning and dialogue, aimed at addressing a real need in the municipality." In this regard, he explained that "the objective has been to strengthen a key service for both residents and tourist areas and rural centers, ensuring its viability and proper functioning."
In parallel, the City Council has worked on updating taxi fares, approved by the Canary Islands Price Commission, in order to **guarantee a balance between the sustainability of the service and the protection of users**, while ensuring transparency and legal certainty. The councilor stressed that "this update was necessary to adapt the service to the current reality, within a modern and regulated economic framework".
