Movimiento Sumar Canarias has started a signature collection addressed to the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, to demand urgent measures to guarantee "dignified access" to water in Lanzarote.
The petition denounces "years of mismanagement" and the state of "critical deterioration" of Lanzarote's water infrastructure. More than 55% of the water produced at the central desalination plant of the Díaz Torrijo Desalination Center, formerly Termolansa, is lost before reaching homes, due to the deterioration of the distribution network. A massive loss of a scarce and vital resource that occurs while thousands of Lanzarote families endure constant supply cuts.
Sumar Canarias points directly to Canal Gestión as responsible for the situation, stating that it "continues to benefit from public resources and citizens' money without guaranteeing an effective or transparent service."
For Rubén Hernández, co-coordinator of the organization, the situation is "unacceptable" and demands "an immediate institutional response." “Water cannot be a privilege, it cannot be tolerated that thousands of Lanzarote residents have continuous cuts, denounce the situation, and there is no effective response from the Cabildo," he insisted, while demanding "urgent measures and that responsibilities be assumed as soon as possible."
The signature collection calls on the citizens of Lanzarote, social groups, and organizations on the island to join the defense of a basic right.
Sumar Canarias frames this action within its commitment to the defense of essential public services and the fight against the mismanagement of common resources. For the organization, water, especially on an island with Lanzarote's geographical conditions, "must be treated as a guaranteed right."
