Socialist Rosa Fernández became the new mayor of La Oliva (Fuerteventura) this Wednesday after the motion of censure against the previous mayor, Claudina Morales, of CC, succeeded. The change was made possible thanks to the seven votes of the PP councilors and two of the PSC-PSOE councilors, which give an absolute majority to the new government team.
Both Luis Vida, spokesperson for the PP, in his statement of reasons against the mayorship of Claudina Morales, and Rosa Fernández in her inaugural speech as the new mayor, emphasized inviting the representative of the mixed group, and spokesperson for Los Verdes, José Luis López, to be part of the incoming government team, who in statements to ACN Press said that he does not reject the proposal, but that it is a "possibility to study".
Claudina Morales bid farewell to the position by launching harsh attacks against the socialists for making deals with the island president of the Majorcan Popular Party, whom she held responsible for the fact that during his long period as mayor "fear reigned" in La Oliva, as well as the "lack of democracy, where the public was confused with the private". According to the now former mayor, "you don't make deals with the PP, you make deals with Domingo González, who is responsible for all of this", and Nereida Calero, CC councilor, added in her speech, "if they wanted prominence, this day will go down in the history of the municipality".
This issue was answered from the PP bench with attacks on her management. "Stop getting upset", said the popular councilor Luis Vida, who recalled that "they call dictator someone who has also run in democratic elections, achieving results similar to those obtained by CC. Do not try to discredit an electoral result as legitimate as yours".
For her part, the new mayor, Rosa Fernández, stressed that during a year of Morales' management, already in her second consecutive term, "she has not been able to form a stable government majority", so "she has functioned by decree, but has not governed".
TENSE CLIMATE
The plenary session was held in the midst of a tense atmosphere, with a large attendance of the public and the media, some of them moved from Gran Canaria. The interventions of the different spokespersons before the vote were interrupted on several occasions by applause or boos from the attendees.
Leaders and spokespersons of the different parties, including most of the councilors of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, except for the representatives of the PP, gave encouragement and support to their colleagues in the municipality.
