The mayor of San Bartolomé City Council, Isidro Pérez, accompanied by the Councilor for Urban Planning, Marlene Marrero, participated this Thursday in a working meeting with the general director of Airports of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Elena Mayoral; the director of Airport Planning and Regulatory Control of AENA, Sonia Corrochano; the director of Airports of the Canary Islands Group, Luis López Chapí, and the director of César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport, Maite Cuenca.
The meeting, in which only the municipalities of San Bartolomé and Tías participated, aimed to learn firsthand about the investments planned for the Airport César Manrique-Lanzarote for the period 2027–2031, included in the proposal of the Airport Regulation Document (DORA), recently approved by the Board of Directors of AENA. Likewise, institutional collaboration with AENA and its services was strengthened, reinforcing coordination regarding the airport's operation and development.
During the meeting, mayor Isidro Pérez emphasized the importance that the planned actions take into account the territorial reality of the municipality, as well as their impact on the citizenry. “The airport is not only a key infrastructure for the connectivity of Lanzarote, but an element with direct impact on the life of San Bartolomé. We cannot remain on the sidelines of strategic decisions that affect our territory and our neighbors,” affirmed Isidro Pérez.
Among the main topics addressed during the meeting, the soundproofing plan in Playa Honda was delved into, the improvement of accessibility and parking, the proposal to unite the terminals, the creation of an airport monitoring commission, and the planning of the wastewater treatment plant associated with the airport infrastructure.
The mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, stated at the end of this meeting that "since the previous term, the DORA plan was launched, a strategic project to boost tourism and improve the connectivity of our islands. Today, this plan materializes, consolidating a historic commitment that, after several years of impetus by the Socialist Party at the head of the Ministry of Transport, finally takes shape, demonstrating how sustained planning and the political vision of the party translate into concrete results for the citizenry and the island of Lanzarote"
Furthermore, during this meeting, the San Bartolomé City Council has formally requested the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility the constitution of the César Manrique Airport Coordination Commission, in accordance with Royal Decree 697/2013. This request is based on the fact that the aerodrome exceeded eight million passengers in 2024 and more than 80% of its surface area is located within the municipal district of San Bartolomé, criteria that activate the possibility of constituting this body, not yet created in Lanzarote.
The official document, sent last October 20, "reflects the commitment of the Ayuntamiento to active and responsible participation in decisions affecting the present and future of the island's main entry point." The next step will be to transfer this request to the Gobierno de Canarias, which can promote its constitution through the Comité de Coordinación Aeroportuaria de Canarias.
From the council, the meeting is very positively valued, which will allow to continue strengthening institutional dialogue and guarantee that the development of the César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport is compatible with the growth of the municipality and the quality of life of its inhabitants.
