The San Bartolomé City Council has established its Children's Council, a participation body made up of 21 boys and girls from the municipality's educational centers who will represent the voice of children in local public life.

The initiative is part of the project promoted by the City Council to advance the construction of a more child-friendly city, fostering the active participation of young people in the design and improvement of their environment. The objective is to create spaces where boys and girls can express their opinions, identify needs, and put forward proposals that contribute to the development of a more inclusive, accessible, and safe municipality.

The selection of the Council members is the result of work carried out throughout the school year with the 5th-grade students from the CEIP Ajei, Playa Honda, and Alexis Tejera Lemes. A total of 196 schoolchildren participated in the process, reflecting on the needs of their environment and exercising their right to participate through a vote in which the 21 boys and girls who will form this first Children's Council of San Bartolomé were elected and will be responsible for conveying the voice and proposals of the municipality's children.

The mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, highlighted that “child participation is a fundamental tool for building a fairer municipality and adapted to the real needs of our boys and girls. Listening to them, giving them a voice, and involving them in decisions that affect their environment is a responsibility we assume with conviction”.

The mayor added that “this Children's Council represents an opportunity for our young people to learn democratic values, citizen participation, and co-responsibility, while at the same time helping us to improve San Bartolomé with their vision, creativity, and ability to identify new opportunities”.

For her part, the Councilor for Education, Estefanía Luzardo, pointed out that “this project is the result of the joint work carried out throughout the school year between the City Council, the educational centers, and the students, who have shown enormous involvement and interest in contributing ideas to improve their municipality”.

The councilwoman highlighted that “the involvement of the 196 students who have been part of this project demonstrates the interest of our children in participating and being heard. The 21 elected representatives will now have the responsibility of conveying the concerns, proposals, and needs of their peers, becoming a direct bridge between childhood and the City Council”.

The project includes a participatory methodology based on playful dynamics, creative workshops, and dialogue spaces that will allow the Council members to analyze the reality of their municipality, identify challenges, and submit proposals to the City Council for their evaluation. Likewise, the initiative seeks to involve families, the educational community, and the citizenry as a whole in the construction of an environment more respectful of children's rights.

With the launch of this Children's Council, the San Bartolomé City Council reaffirms its commitment to citizen participation, education in democratic values, and the promotion of public policies that place children at the center of municipal action.
