Marine cages in Lanzarote

The mayor of San Bartolomé, Alexis Tejera, has also shown his rejection of the location of marine cages on the municipality's coastline and bordering areas, thus joining the opposition also expressed by the Tías City Council.

In a statement, Tejera states that he has already requested the municipal legal services to draft allegations. He also states that he is willing, if necessary, to take legal action against the order of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands that allows the placement of these fish farming facilities off the coast of Arrecife, San Bartolomé and Tías.

In his opinion, the decision of the regional government of February 11, 2021, which approves the detailed planning of the ZIA LZ-2 Aquaculture Interest Zone, framed in a Regional Aquaculture Planning Plan of the Canary Islands “PROAC” has "a negative impact on the coast".

“We cannot allow the deterioration of the quality of our waters or the effects on marine biodiversity, both for tourism reasons and for environmental reasons: the sea that surrounds Lanzarote is a first-rate resource, as is the volcanic landscape or the tourist centers and we cannot put it at risk”, declared the first mayor of San Bartolomé.
