The San Bartolomé City Council is moving forward with the milling and resurfacing project for a section of Calderetas street, between Rubicón and Garduña streets, with the aim of improving the safety, functionality, and conservation conditions of this road. The action includes an intervention on the roadway and has a base tender budget of 85,990.45 euros.
The City Council has requested that the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the Lanzarote Water Consortium, prior to the execution of the asphalt paving, proceed with the replacement of the water supply pipeline that runs along this road, due to the continuous breakdowns it registers and the significant water losses associated with its current condition.
The mayor of San Bartolomé, Isidro Pérez, explains that "we have expressly asked the Cabildo and the Water Consortium to replace the supply pipe on Calderetas street before proceeding with its asphalt paving. We are talking about one of the streets that registers the highest losses and a pipeline that suffers breakdowns recurrently, so it would make no sense to renew the surface now and have to lift it again later to repair the pipe."
Pérez also points out that "this request has caused the asphalt paving to be delayed, but we believe it is the responsible decision. We have reiterated our request to both the Cabildo and the Water Consortium because we want both actions to be coordinated and that, when the roadway is renewed, it is with the guarantee that we will not have to intervene on it again due to problems in the supply network."
The replacement of the pipe, a prior step to asphalt paving
The City Council considers it a priority that the replacement of the pipeline be undertaken before carrying out the paving work planned in the municipal project. In this way, it will be avoided that an eventual rupture of the pipe forces subsequent new excavations on a newly renovated roadway.
The asphalt paving project responds to the advanced deterioration of the surface layer of the roadbed, which shows numerous partial interventions, irregularities, and discontinuities that affect the functionality of the road and road safety. The action will allow for the superficial rehabilitation of the roadway by milling the top five centimeters and subsequently laying a new asphalt wearing course, also five centimeters thick.
The Councilor for Urban Planning, Marlene Romero, points out that "the action is planned to comprehensively improve the conditions of the road, but we consider it essential to coordinate any intervention on the supply networks beforehand to avoid subsequent actions on the renewed surface".
In this regard, the action is limited to the superficial reinforcement of the surface, without affecting the existing sidewalks or pedestrian crossings, which maintain accessibility conditions. The project is also developed in accordance with the current municipal planning.
For his part, the Councilor for Public Works, Raúl de León, explains that "Calderetas street needs work on its surface, but also a definitive solution for the problems presented by its supply network. That is why we have communicated this need to the Cabildo and the Consortium and we will continue to insist that the replacement of the pipe can be carried out before the asphalting".
An action to improve the conditions of the road
The intervention will include the complete milling of the section subject to the project, the preparation of the surface and the application of an adhesion primer before executing the new wearing course. Likewise, the raising and adjustment of manhole covers and grates is contemplated to adapt them to the new road level.
The project establishes an estimated execution period of three weeks from the signing of the site survey report and foresees an average of ten people working during the development of the work.
The action has a material execution budget of 67,533.54 euros, an estimated contract value of 80,364.91 euros and a base tender budget, including IGIC, of 85,990.45 euros. The budget incorporates, in addition to the paving work, items for preliminary work, signage, waste management, and health and safety.
From the San Bartolomé City Council, the need for adequate coordination between the renovation of the supply network and the subsequent asphalting is insisted upon, with the aim of offering a lasting solution and avoiding new interventions on a road that has been recently rehabilitated.
"We want to do things right and with a long-term vision. The objective is not simply to asphalt the street, but to first solve the pipe problem and then renew the surface so that the action has the greatest possible durability," concludes the mayor Isidro Pérez.
