The PP has leveled harsh criticism against the mayor of Arrecife, Enrique Pérez Parrilla, whom they have identified as "the sole culprit" for the power outage at the Los Geranios school. The PP deputy in the Parliament of the Canary Islands for the island of Lanzarote, Fernando Figuereo, has insisted that the "negligence and incompetence" of the mayor of Arrecife is "unforgivable," accusing him of being "the cause of 391 children attending class for six months with serious risk to their physical integrity."
According to a statement issued by Figuereo, the mayor of the capital of Lanzarote "knew about the electrical problems at the school and did nothing to solve them." The popular parliamentarian asked the Minister of Industry of the Government of the Canary Islands, Jorge Rodríguez, about this matter in the last Plenary Session of Parliament, in which "it became clear that the school had very deficient low-voltage electrical installations, some of which were classified by the inspectors as very serious." "They should have been corrected before ordering the restoration of the electricity supply," he indicated.
"Despite the fact that these reports have been in the possession of the city council since last October, the socialist mayor, displaying an apathy and recklessness beyond all responsible behavior, has not yet undertaken the repair of extremely dangerous electrical installations that could have affected the physical integrity of the students," Fernando Figuereo emphasized.
"It is regrettable, he added, that despite the numerous requests made by the ministry, the city council has not acted in all this time and allows children and their teachers to teach without light and in pitiful conditions that directly affect the quality of education," the popular parliamentarian noted.
