The Port Authority of Las Palmas will cede a space in the Los Mármoles dock in Arrecife, for the first reception of unaccompanied minors who arrive by boat or canoe to the island, given the limit situation presented by its supervised centers, its president, Beatriz Calzada (CC), told EFE.

In statements provided by her press office, Calzada explained that this transfer occurs "in response to the request for collaboration from the Government of the Canary Islands to enable spaces to install emergency first reception infrastructures for minors arriving by boat or canoe."

The request has been made for the Los Mármoles dock and the "land to be provided is located next to the container that the Red Cross already has to assist immigrants arriving on the island from the African coasts," she said.

Within all the limitations that the docks of state interest have due to their own port operations, which must meet "security conditions", it must also be "guaranteed the safety of people in the port" and, therefore, this space has been chosen, Calzada said.

This measure is a way to collaborate "in a situation of social emergency, understanding that there is a limit situation in relation to the reception of unaccompanied minors," said Calzada, who added that "we cannot stand idly by, but on the contrary, lend a hand in everything we can."
