The Prosecutor for Foreigners in the Canary Islands, Teseida García, stated this Tuesday that she will not allow unaccompanied immigrant minors to remain in tents in the ports of the islands as if they were homes for children.
García made these statements to EFE when asked about the instructions given by the Government of the Canary Islands to the Ministry of Social Welfare to request Puertos del Estado to enable spaces in its facilities to host and care for immigrant minors, "given the situation of collapse and totally unsustainable" of the community to house them in reception centers.
The Prosecutor for Foreigners indicated that she could only accept that situation occurred at a specific moment, while emphasizing that she is not "willing" to house minors in tents without knowing how long.
She appealed to common sense and recalled that adult immigrants cannot stay more than three days in the temporary care centers for emigrants, the CATE, so it is much less permissible with children.
"The Arguineguín pier was what it was" and cannot be repeated, Teseida García emphasized.
The aforementioned pier, located in the municipality of Mogán, in Gran Canaria, housed a temporary immigrant camp in tents in 2020 until the Ombudsman requested its dismantling, due to its overcrowded conditions as it came to concentrate more than 2,300 people.
