The Cabildo of Lanzarote hosted this Monday the meeting between the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, and the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, with the so-called “Canarian agenda” as a backdrop. The meeting was held in the Presidency room of the Casa Cabildo and was attended by local authorities, including the island's president, Oswaldo Betancort. Sánchez, who preferred to climb the stairs instead of using the elevator, stopped on the first floor, where two photographs of emblematic landscapes of the island caught his attention.
The images, an aerial view of the vineyards of La Geria and another of crops in jable, are part of the campaign with which Lanzarote was recognized in May by the FAO as an Important World Agricultural Heritage System (SIPAM), becoming the first European island to obtain this recognition. Two days after the visit, and after the interest shown by the president, the Cabildo sent the photographs to the residence of La Mareta in Costa Teguise, where Sánchez is enjoying his summer vacation with his family.
The Cabildo's gesture contrasts with recent episodes of political tension, such as the motion presented in the island's plenary session to declare Sánchez persona non grata, which was finally withdrawn after a legal report. However, the visit of the head of the Spanish Executive to Lanzarote ended marked by the exchange of courtesies and by a gift that symbolizes the importance of the island's agricultural heritage, despite the fact that the Lanzarote countryside faces serious problems of water supply for irrigation and the effects of the drought.
