The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort (Canarian Coalition), has announced during the celebration of the extraordinary plenary session convened for this Tuesday that he will put four options out for public consultation to decide what salary he should receive.

This decision has been made as a result of the controversy that his proposal to raise his salary to 92,928.03 euros gross per year brought with it, above the regional president, Ángel Víctor Torres (76.823 euros gross per year), and the president of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez (90,010.20 euros).

In the extraordinary plenary session and dealing with his proposal for a salary increase as a point of the day, Betancort responded to criticism for having proposed as one of his first measures to raise his salary 35% more than the former president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo.

All the options offered by Betancort exceed the average salary of his socialist predecessor, which was around 67,016 euros per year. In this way, the new president of the Cabildo has proposed to the population to choose between the following options: "The maximum option is 104,544.03 euros, which is planned for municipalities, with a population of between 300,001 to 500,000 inhabitants," he explained.

As a second option, the nationalist leader bases himself on the norm prior to Law 31/2022, of December 23, to propose as a second option "a salary one euro higher than the highest category official, currently set at 98,196.46 euros."

In third position are the 92,928.03 euros proposed by the nationalist, framed between remunerations included for populations between 150,001 and 300,000 inhabitants (in which Lanzarote is located). In addition, Betancort pointed to a fourth option, such as "a relatively reasonable salary that is 87,120.59 euros, which corresponds to populations between 75,001 to 150,000 inhabitants," he blurted out during his speech.

"Oswaldo Betancort charges more than Pedro Sánchez if Lanzarote wants, so when putting the headline some tremble the pen," he blurted out before announcing the proposals.

To conclude, Oswaldo Betancort has maintained his salary proposal for the vice president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Jacobo Medina (PP), who will charge 80,000 euros per year; the councilors with exclusive dedication reach 70,000 euros; and the spokesperson for the opposition group will remain at 70,000 euros.

The population will have 48 hours to choose through the Lanzarote Data Center what will be the salary of the nationalist president for the next four years.
