The Yaiza City Council urges the Cabildo of Lanzarote to take immediate action leading to the removal of about twelve abandoned palm tree trunks that residents and tourists can see at the entrance to the town of Uga. The mayor, Óscar Noda, also demands that the Cabildo, as the competent administration, undertake "the maintenance of the green areas along the roadsides to prevent their loss or degradation, as is the case we are reporting."
The Yaiza Councilor for Parks and Gardens, Rubén Arca, recalls that "the City Council has acted in irrigation, pest control, pruning, and conservation of palm groves that are the responsibility of the Cabildo, but it is high time that it assumes its responsibilities. It is not the first time we have demanded action regarding the cleaning of road margins, the installation of irrigation, and the cleaning of gardens in several areas of our municipality, and when the Cabildo has acted, we have no problem in publicly thanking them. We request the immediate removal of the cemetery of palm trees that disfigures the town of Uga".
The mayor of Yaiza points to the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, as primarily responsible "for the apathy and neglect in the care of the island's landscape." Óscar Noda declares that "I do not want to think that his abandonment of this matter and others, such as the lack of action on the sinkhole at Los Hervideros or corrective measures to prevent the water outages that Yaiza suffers every week, has to do with a dark strategy dictated to him to harm municipalities not governed by the CC-PP tandem".
Yaiza was the pioneering institution in Lanzarote to launch, starting in 2020, a pilot test, developed in several phases, of low-pressure **endotherapy treatment** on 300 palm trees in the municipality to protect the plant species from *Rhynchophorus ferrugineus* and thus control the expansion of the harmful beetle popularly known as the "picudín" that affects a large part of Lanzarote's palm groves.
The City Council also trained its staff responsible for garden maintenance in the municipality in palm tree management, plant health, structural diagnosis, and maintenance. Yaiza is carrying out pruning and conservation work this week in the palm grove located at the entrance to Playa Blanca.
