The New Canaries (NC) councilor in the Teguise City Council, Fernando Jiménez, criticizes the "lack of transparency" of the highest authority of the Teguise government group, the conservative mayor Olivia Duque, for "refusing" to appear in the plenary session held this Monday at the proposal of the Canarian formation.
The NC councilor, Dr. Fernando Jiménez, requested an appearance from Duque to explain to the plenary session "the entire procedure" carried out in the Famara Mobility Plan. This appearance was approved in the informative commission prior to the plenary session, but was later "annulled" by the mayor due to an "error in procedure" and claiming "that she would appear when she wanted".
For Jiménez, “this attitude of the government group does not correspond to democratic and transparent criteria. For some reason, the highest authorities of the institution do not want to show their faces to the plenary and seek excuses, restricting the freedom and the right of the opposition to ask and request explanations.”
From NC they consider that there is a “denial and obscurantism” regarding the project that has been carried out and what is intended to be done in the future in Caleta de Famara, "turning their backs on the residents and the more than 1,894 signatures that have been collected in favor of protecting the town and its surroundings."
“It was a perfect opportunity for the government group to be transparent and friendly with its residents and with the public representatives who carry out our work from commitment, responsibility and democratic legitimacy. There is not a single reason to restrict the democratic right to have all the information from those ultimately responsible,” says Fernando Jiménez, who continues by alluding to the fact that these attitudes reflect “a fragile, disorganized and increasingly undemocratic government group.”
According to Nueva Canarias, they will continue to "demand the appearance of the mayor and those responsible for traffic and mobility until they explain what has been done, how it has been done and based on what criteria." “Transparency, democracy and participation. We don't ask much of this government group. Or perhaps for them they are incomprehensible words,” says Fernando Jiménez.
