The councilor of the Mixed Group in the Insular Council of Lanzarote regrets the rejection by the Government of the Insular Council of Lanzarote to initiate the procedures to develop bases that subsidize 100% of the cleaning and eradication costs of the Mexican cochineal as well as the reimplantation of the prickly pear in the farms of Mala and Guatiza.

Noda criticizes that his motion is not supported, since it was and is very important for the island that budget items be allocated in the 2025 budget to subsidize the removal of the current prickly pears, wait for five years and repopulate, and while the Granja Experimental nursery carries out the planting of the prickly pear so that farmers who wish to recover their farms have the possibility of acquiring them once the plague of the Mexican cochineal has been eradicated,”.

“Unfortunately, we have reached a point of no return where only the eradication of all the prickly pears is possible, but those responsible will have to be held accountable to the rulers of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote and Teguise of the last 15 years, but even more serious it seems to me that knowing the problem, they have not wanted to support this initiative.”

In addition, Óscar Noda proposed “to resize the Cochineal Transformation Center so that it opens and welcomes this recovery program, thus becoming a meeting point for processing aid and other procedures related to this crop and this area.”

Yaiza Triathlon

On the other hand, Noda obtained the approval of the plenary for “the Cabildo of Lanzarote to support and second the initiative of the Yaiza City Council to award the IES Yaiza for its 25 years organizing the Triathlon”.

In this way, Óscar Noda sees his argument reinforced, considering that “the IES Yaiza triathlon meets the requirements for the Viera y Clavijo 2024 distinction thanks to the effort, perseverance and tenacity of all its teachers and students in the development of an innovative initiative full of values and good practices. The Yaiza City Council is already processing the file in which it formally requests the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands that this year the IES Yaiza triathlon be the distinguished Viera y Clavijo 2024”, explains Noda.

In short, both initiatives “could contribute enormously to supporting important issues on the island of Lanzarote such as safeguarding our culture, our landscape and our agricultural culture by defending the cochineal and, at the same time, through the second motion, this one approved, of continuing to promote education in values as well as support for the educational system and teaching our young people the path of sport, moving them away from sedentary lifestyles through sports activity, valuing an event such as the IES Yaiza triathlon, a student sports event that contributes, year after year, cooperation, companionship and solidarity among the participants”, concludes the councilor.
