From the Local Committee of Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-BC) in Tías, they demand that the City Council not forget the historical demand of the residents to have canopies at the bus stops and a regular quality public transport service.
For the spokesperson of the Canaristas in the municipality, Juan de León, “the Tías City Council has a budget valued at 1,190,833.94 euros for the execution of improvements to the urban canopy network for public transport in the municipality.”
However, de León points out, “we cannot share or endorse the approach given to it, since the canopies that have been installed in other parts of the island do not respond to the model agreed upon in its day between the Island Council and the city councils, which contemplated a unique and coherent image for the entire island.”
“We know that, as always, the government group of Tías will try to divert its responsibility by blaming the Cabildo, which effectively has the powers in matters of island transport. But they cannot continue to use this excuse while our neighbors have been abandoned for years in terms of public transport, waiting under the sun, rain or cold, in addition to not having public shade spaces with trees,” says Juan de León.
In addition, the Canarista points out that “the current canopies are dirty and deteriorated despite the fact that they are new. A regular maintenance service is needed to keep these infrastructures, which are so important for public transport users, in optimal condition.”
For NC-BC, “if the current rulers of the municipality and the Cabildo suffered the inclemency of the weather while waiting for a bus, they would know what students, workers and the elderly currently suffer every day.”
“The public institutions of Lanzarote have a historical debt with public transport. Huge amounts of money are invested in buying buses every year and developing mobility plans, but the truth is that the service is still deficient and not very useful,” maintains de León, who “demands a triple alliance between the pedestrian, sustainable mobility and public transport that makes Lanzarote a true model of mobility and awareness.”
With everything, from NC-BC it is demanded that the original agreement be respected and that decent, functional, comfortable canopies be installed in accordance with the unique island image, putting an end to political occurrences once and for all.
