The president and Tourism councillor of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, together with the Lanzarote delegation present at Fitur 2022, has made official the signing of a protocol of adhesion for the incorporation of the Island to the Association of European Regions for Sustainability and Competitiveness (NECSTouR).
In this way, Lanzarote becomes part of an organism that will allow "the participation of the Island in tourism sustainability projects at European level". Dolores Corujo explains that the object of this agreement is "the mutual provision of services between the Tourism Lanzarote organism and NECSTouR, as well as the establishment of lines of work and joint cooperation of mutual benefit".
“With this agreement, this association commits to provide us and make us participants in a strategy of interregional cooperation focused on key strategic approaches such as intelligent tourist destinations, sociocultural balance, in skills and talent, in security and resilience, and in statistics and measurability”, details the president.
“This also consists of transferring techniques, knowledge, information or technologies of a sustainable nature that have become good practices, in order to be implemented in the Lanzarote island area”, she adds.

On the other hand, through this adhesion, Turismo Lanzarote acquires its commitment with NECSTouR to communicate "events, appointments, meetings and reunions are established in order to reach the objectives proposed from the Association". In addition, it commits to transfer, in a reciprocal way, "techniques, knowledge, information or technologies of a sustainable nature that have become good practices, in order to be implemented in the European scope".
“This alliance will generate reciprocal benefits between our Island and this organism, enriching us with resources, ideas and projects that, in an innovative way, we will be able to implement here, at the same time that at European level they will know and implement tourist strategies and projects in which Lanzarote is a pioneer, giving us more visibility abroad and reinforcing our commitment to sustainable and quality tourism”, concludes the president.
The Spanish Global Compact Network of the UN will advise Lanzarote
Within the meetings and acts of Fitur, the president has also held a meeting with the managing director of the Spanish Global Compact Network, Cristina Sánchez. This is a UN initiative that leads business sustainability. In it, it was agreed to "work hand in hand" so that the Island receives advice on "social sustainability in the tourism sector".
“Lanzarote is committed to consolidating itself as one of the safest and most sustainable tourist destinations in the market”, explains Corujo, who considers that it is "essential to have help and advice so that the tourism sector of the Island complies with the requirements in terms of sustainability aligned with the objectives of the Global Compact”.
In this sense, María Dolores Corujo hopes to receive the visit of representatives of the Spanish Global Compact Network to carry out seminars aimed at developing lines of social sustainability, to promote "well-being in the tourism sector and at the same time support other issues such as gender equality or salary recognition".
