Lanzarote En Pie (LEP) will present a motion in the next plenary session of the Arrecife City Council requesting the modification of the traffic ordinance to regulate the use of scooters in the capital.

The spokesperson for LEP, Leticia Padilla, explained that the problem that arises in Arrecife in this regard is that the Traffic Ordinance, in force since 2007, "does not currently respond to certain regulatory needs regarding the circulation of scooters or personal mobility vehicles (VMP)", as she assures is reflected in "the numerous citizen complaints" that reach her municipal political group.

"It is obvious to everyone that from 2007 to today the proliferation of scooters (VMP) has increased exponentially, both in the private and business spheres, where we can find groups of tourists traveling in this type of vehicle or several units of electric scooters scattered around different parts of the city that belong to companies that rent them," argues Leticia Padilla.

"These situations, in the absence of specific municipal regulation for these vehicles, give rise to ambiguous interpretations by Local Police officers, as well as by the users themselves," adds Padilla.

From LEP they point out that the Arrecife City Council has at its disposal the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUSA) "in which a Mobility and Road Use Ordinance is proposed." "While it is true that it is a much more extensive proposal that covers not only aspects of traffic but also the use of roads, we believe that part of the articles that refer to the regulation of the circulation of VMP can be extracted to apply it to the current Traffic Ordinance," they state from the political formation.
