The municipal political group, Lanzarote En Pie (LEP), will propose in the Plenary of the Arrecife City Council the promotion of an awareness and sensitization campaign to promote the care of the Arrecife coastline and prevent harmful actions in the surroundings of the beaches and coves of the municipality during the summer period.

In addition, the municipal group will present two other proposals related to the granting of aid to promote autonomy for people with functional diversity in vulnerable situations, and with the application of basic measures to achieve friendly pedestrian spaces in the city. The three motions will be debated in the municipal Plenary next Tuesday, June 28.

Leandro Delgado, LEP councilor in Arrecife, argues that “promoting a summer awareness campaign for the care and protection of beaches and coves is a basic measure in the face of the foreseeable increase in pressure on the municipal coastline.” In this sense, he recalls that “cigarette butts, plastics and packaging are the main waste that is abandoned in the environment, which pose a risk to marine life and the health of the coastal ecosystem.” Given this context, the municipal group's proposal emphasizes the increase in containers and bins for separating solid waste and better preventive surveillance. “The chemical components of a single cigarette butt are enough to contaminate ten liters of sea water and the fauna confuses it with food, as well as plastics and microplastics. We are talking about the care of unique and high-value ecosystems at risk of disappearing,” says Delgado.

In another order of things, the municipalists will present two motions that address social and coexistence issues. They hope to reach a plenary agreement for the creation of a line of subsidies aimed at individuals residing in Arrecife, who due to their age or limitations have difficulties functioning in their usual environment, facilitating access to benefits and services that improve their quality of life and their integration into the social environment. From LEP they affirm that “people with functional diversity do not have to give up moving freely with autonomy and independence, beyond their usual environment. We believe that people in this group in a situation of economic vulnerability should have access to aid that allows them to adapt, repair or improve their vehicles.”

Achieving a friendly pedestrian space in the city is the third proposal that the councilors of Lanzarote En Pie will take in Arrecife. For the municipal group, “pedestrian zones must be maintained as a safe environment for people who transit through them.” The group explains that this proposal is based on three axes: promoting the civic use of these spaces, increasing the frequency of Local Police officers on foot and enforcing the ordinances in this regard. “Those who access pedestrian or semi-pedestrian environments want to feel that they are in a friendly space, walk safely without having to dodge signs, chairs or tables; cars, skateboards or bicycles. The capacity to react to obstacles is not the same for all people: the elderly, with difficulty in vision, with reduced mobility, young children, etc. We must try to leave a friendlier city,” concluded Leandro Delgado.
