The Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, led by Mariano H. Zapata, through the Directorate General of Environmental Quality, has concluded its cycle of support sessions for the hotel sector in Lanzarote with the aim of facilitating the implementation of the Food Loss and Waste Prevention Plans (PPDA) and supporting establishments in adapting to the obligations established by Law 1/2025, of April 1.

The last of these workshops was held at the El Zaguán citizen participation center, in Arrecife, with the collaboration of the City Council of the Lanzarote capital. The meeting brought together about twenty professionals linked to the island's hotel sector, including managers, sustainability officers, and professionals from the Food and Beverage (F&B) area, profiles called upon to lead the implementation of these measures in their respective establishments.

The Director General of Environmental Quality, Ángel Montañés, highlighted that "the response we have received on all the islands shows that the hotel sector understands that reducing food waste is not only a legal obligation, but an opportunity to move towards a more efficient, competitive, and sustainable tourism model."

He also added that "from the Ministry, we will continue to offer training, support, and tools that allow companies to incorporate the circular economy into their daily activities, facilitating compliance with regulations and generating benefits for both the sector and society as a whole."

During the workshop, the BENDITA COMIDA initiative (www.benditacomida.org), coordinated by Excelencia Turística de Canarias, was also presented. This project promotes a cultural transformation in tourist establishments to prevent food waste by involving work teams and visitors themselves, incorporating tools and best practices aimed at the responsible use of food.

Assessment of a program developed on four islands

With the celebration of this last workshop in Lanzarote, the Ministry puts the finishing touch on a training program that has traveled to different parts of the archipelago, with five sessions held in Tenerife (Adeje and Puerto de la Cruz), Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote.

These actions have made it possible to bring specialized training closer to the main tourist destinations in the Canary Islands, reinforcing the collaboration between public administrations and the private sector to move towards more efficient resource management and an effective reduction of food waste.

With this program, the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy continues to promote the circular economy in strategic sectors such as tourism, promoting the prevention of food waste as a tool to reduce waste, optimize resources, and move towards a more sustainable development model for the Canary Islands.
