Lanzarote celebrates its first Dog Week with workshops, talks and activities in all municipalities

The Cabildo organizes, from July 21 to 27, a special program to promote respect, adoption and animal welfare, with the collaboration of NGOs and town councils such as Teguise

The Cabildo of Lanzarote organizes a complete program of activities on the occasion of International Dog Day. The initiative, which will be held from July 21 to 27, includes workshops, children's activities, educational talks, exhibitions and interactive murals, with the aim of promoting respect and affection for these pets. 

The Councilor for Animal Welfare of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Armando Santana, stressed during the presentation of the program developed this Monday the importance of continuing to promote actions that promote responsibility in animal ownership. And he said: "It is essential that we continue to generate spaces for reflection, information and participation that help to reinforce a respectful coexistence with our companion animals. This first week dedicated to dogs in Lanzarote and La Graciosa also wants to be an invitation to all citizens to get involved, and we deeply thank NGOs such as SARA or LanzaAnimal for the tireless work they do on our island in favor of animal welfare," he said.

Santana detailed how the program includes informative talks, educational workshops and itinerant murals, in a commitment to raise awareness from an early age and from different formats. The councilor, who thanked the involvement of the Welfare Area of the Teguise City Council, which collaborates in this initiative, also recalled that in Lanzarote there are currently more than 40,000 registered dogs. "Combating animal abandonment, promoting volunteering and adoption, and turning Lanzarote and La Graciosa into exemplary territories in animal welfare policies are shared objectives that unite us and guide us on this path," he stressed.

For his part, the Councilor for Animal Welfare of the Teguise City Council, Ginés González, has expressed his intention to continue supporting initiatives like this, "which not only raise awareness," he declared, "but also promote values of respect and responsibility. We invite all citizens to participate in these days and to approach the municipal shelters where there are many dogs waiting for a second chance and a home."

 

Program

The program of activities will begin with a commemorative mural in which citizens can participate for free by attending the different places according to the stipulated date. For this, the work will be located today Monday, July 21, in San Bartolomé; this Tuesday, July 22, in Yaiza; on Wednesday, July 23, in Tías; on Thursday, July 24, in Tinajo; on Friday, July 25, in Arrecife; on Saturday, July 26, in La Graciosa and Haría, and on Sunday, July 27, in Teguise.

This Friday, July 25, at 17:30 hours, a training talk will be held entitled 'How to train your dog to prevent behavioral problems', given by the professional in ethology, Ana Álvarez. 

The following day, Saturday, July 26, at 10:00 hours, a practical and participatory demonstration of canine obedience will be held live by CECAN Lanzarote. At 11:00 hours, the Lanzarote club of the Presa Canario will give a meeting on the occasion of its recognition as a Generic Heritage of the Government of the Canary Islands. In addition, at 13:30 hours, a Campbell test will be organized and, at 17:00 hours, there will be a demonstration of dog grooming and dog care. 


On Sunday, July 27, a training talk will be held for volunteers, workers of Animal Protection Centers and other professionals in the sector entitled 'How to promote Animal Welfare in the management of rescued animals and in their care in protection centers'. The day will culminate at 17:30 hours with the practical workshop 'Create a bond with your dog so that he listens to you and pays attention to you', taught by the professional in ethology, Ana Álvarez.
