The Governing Council of the Cabildo of Lanzarote approves this Wednesday, May 14, the project, the contracting specifications and the expense for the execution of the works of the Central Line of drinking water distribution in Lanzarote, with a budget of 6,251,330.23 euros.

The municipal district of Tinajo and the western area of Teguise are connected to the island's drinking water transport network of Lanzarote with a branch that starts from Montaña Mina (San Bartolomé) and connects with the transport network in the vicinity of the population center of Mozaga (Tinajo).

The current network is insufficient to cover the demand. To solve this problem, the solution contained in the project of "Improvement of the Drinking Water Distribution Network Montaña Mina-Mozaga" has been articulated, consisting of the execution of a new branch in the transport network. This complete branch will start from the Montaña Mina reservoir and end at the confluence point of the Tinajo-Tao-Famara branches, being executed in different phases by the municipal districts of Teguise and San Bartolomé.

This is a project financed 80 percent by the Canary Islands Development Fund (FDCAN) and 20 percent by the Cabildo of Lanzarote.

President Oswaldo Betancort has highlighted the importance of this pipeline that "will provide Lanzarote with a new and modern water distribution network, and will achieve, after the completion of the works of the North Line, that the island is in a position to receive better quality drinking water in each and every one of the towns of the island".

Oswaldo Betancort points out in this regard, that "the increase in demand due, not only to the increase in population but also to the rise of agricultural activity, must have a response, increasing and improving our transport and distribution network to adapt it to current and future needs".

The Department of Finance, Planning and Project Contracting, headed by María Jesús Tovar, is the body in charge of contracting the works. Tovar highlighted "the great work that has been carried out from the different areas of the Cabildo to be able to release the FDCAN funds, in a project of enormous magnitude that places Lanzarote on the path to solving the great challenges we face in terms of water supply".

The Minister of Finance has detailed that the work "will be tendered in two lots; the first in the section that affects the municipality of Teguise, with a budget of 1,584,811.89 euros, and the second in the municipal district of San Bartolomé with an item of 4,666,516.34 euros. The Teguise section has an execution period of 9 months and 18 months for San Bartolomé".

At this point, the President of the Cabildo wanted to emphasize that "the actions in hydraulic investments are being carried out throughout the entire cycle, from the improvement of production, water transport, purification, sanitation and the irrigation network".
