The Minister of Social Welfare, Youth and Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands, Inés Rojas, is committed to creating a Food Bank in Lanzarote, and this Wednesday will present her proposal to the Island Coordination Table of the Cabildo and the Municipalities of the island in matters of Social Action and Social Services.
The Food Bank is a non-governmental, non-profit organization, based on volunteering and whose objective is to recover surplus food and redistribute it among people in need, avoiding any waste or misuse.
These entities, which operate under the motto "We need what you have left over", aim to help alleviate the food needs of people in need by recovering surplus food from production or marketing losses, before they expire.
In Spain, there are fifty Food Banks, officially recognized by the Spanish State, and now this initiative could also reach Lanzarote.
Foster care of minors
In addition, Inés Rojas and the regional president of the Red Cross, Alejo Trujillo, will also present this Wednesday in Lanzaote the campaign launched by the Canarian Executive to promote the foster care of minors in family units.
The objective of this initiative is to promote that minors who are under the protection of the Autonomous Community and who reside in centers, are taken in by a family.
The presentation will be attended by the general director of Child and Family Protection of the Government of the Canary Islands, Carmen Steinert, as well as representatives of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the municipalities of the island.
