The founder of Unidos por Yaiza (UPY), Gladys Acuña, has resigned as president of the formation, although she states that she will remain as a grassroots member, as confirmed by La Voz de Lanzarote.
According to party sources, Acuña submitted her resignation letter three weeks ago, where she stated her resignation from positions within the party. However, it was not until this Tuesday that the executive committee announced this information.
Acuña had to leave her position as mayor of Yaiza in January 2018, after being sentenced to 14 years of disqualification for a crime of urban prevarication and another of prevarication by omission in the Stratvs case. However, she maintained her organic position in the party, which is what she has now resigned from.
After the conviction, Gladys Acuña tried to run in the 2019 elections, as she interpreted that the sentence only disqualified her from serving as mayor. Thus, she tried to be a candidate for the Cabildo - within the coalition that UPY created under the name of Lanzarote Avanza - and for the Parliament of the Canary Islands, within the list of CC. However, the Electoral Board declared her candidacy "illegal".
Subsequently, the mayor of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort, hired Gladys Acuña as an advisor to the City Council, where she still works today.
