The general director of Youth of the Government of the Canary Islands, Daniel Morales, attended this weekend the election of the new permanent commission of the Youth Council of the Canary Islands, which from now on will be chaired by Eliana Parrilla, and appealed for collaboration with the third sector to face the great challenges of the youth population in the islands. "We are talking about mental health, the migration crisis, access to housing and employment, these are great challenges but not impossible if the administration, entities and youth associations work in constant collaboration."
Daniel Morales congratulated the new team and thanked the altruistic work of the outgoing commission that has been led by Brenda Rivero. "They have been many hours dedicated to the Canary Islands youth, but you have been a key piece for us to be here today, celebrating this assembly and thinking about what is coming for the future." "The Youth Council is not only a work table or a space for meetings, it is the voice of young people, it is the loudspeaker that amplifies what happens in the street, what they feel, what they think and what the young people of our islands need," he added.
Eliana Parrilla Morin is from Lanzarote and member of Prensa Juvenil Canaria, linked to the associative world since she was 15 years old, graduated in Social Education and researcher in the branch of social participation. She has been awarded the runner-up prize in the 2023 Young Canary Islands Award and was invited as a youth representative to the swearing-in of Princess Leonor.
The new commission headed by Eliana Parrilla will have Gabriel Castellano (New Generations) as first vice president; Carla Sosa (Nexo) as second vice president; Idafe Hernández (UDECA) as secretary; François de Moreno (ROTARACT) as treasurer; and Carlos Jiménez (AMIAT) and Nira Pulido (Young Nationalists of the Canary Islands) as members.
Morales highlighted "the importance of this democratic process that guarantees the plurality we need, and that the different opinions and sensitivities are represented." In addition, he reaffirmed the commitment of the General Directorate of Youth to the Council, since they are the ones who accompany us, question us, challenge us and help us build the policies that really affect the youth."
