The mayor of Teguise, Olivia Duque (CC), intervened this Wednesday on the program Buenos días, Lanzarote of Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero to talk about the different infrastructure improvement actions that are being carried out in the municipality. Among them, she explained the blocked situation of the project for the reform and expansion of the Special Education Center Nuestra Señora de los Volcanes in Tahíche and accused the Ministry of Education of the Government of the Canary Islands of "lack of involvement".
In this regard, the mayor assured that with the Ministry of Education, led by Poli Suárez (PP), "municipalities suffer greatly with this way of running the centers and education because it leaves much to be desired because there is a lack of involvement".
"I have 14 educational centers in Teguise and we cannot continue to endure what we are enduring. The Ministry of Education is not here, nor is it expected, nor does it help, nor does it provide us with money," she continued.
Thus, Duque explained the stalemate situation with the Special Education Center Nuestra Señora de los Volcanes, stating that "it depends entirely on the Ministry of Education."
The Government of the Canary Islands dismissed the procedure to draft the project, whose tender had a budget of 219,898.43 euros, because the report indicated that the building is in a situation of "out of order". According to this document, this condition would prevent extensions, allowing only conservation and maintenance works. However, the resolution itself clarifies that the documentation sent by the Government of the Canary Islands regarding the extensions carried out after 1999 was not taken into account.
"The City Council does not pose impediments, it only relies on regulations like any ordinary person with respect to planning. It is the Ministry that has to find the tools, and the City Council has put them on the table, for its technicians to unblock this project because let's not forget that those who have been carrying out the works have not been the Teguise City Council, but the Ministry of Education or the Cabildo," she stressed.
Thus, the mayor recalled that although the center is in the municipality of Teguise, "it is a special education center for all of Lanzarote and depends entirely on the Ministry."
Likewise, he assured that the technicians from the Teguise City Council and the Ministry of Education have already held meetings and "they have been told which path they can take," but Olivia Duque emphasized that it is the Government of the Canary Islands itself that must carry it out.
Furthermore, he revealed that he has asked the Department of Education of the City Council to send a letter again to the General Directorate of Educational Infrastructure to unblock the situation of the center.
The mayor also recalled that at the time "it was considered to move the Tahíche center to Arrecife because both the AMPA and the center preferred it, but I don't know for what reason that was discarded and it was decided to keep it where it is. Urbanistically, a series of procedures must be resolved and they are the competent ones."
"We are tired of enduring the dagger of educational problems in our municipality and I am talking about Teguise, but it happens at an insular level and that cannot be. Let them get involved, find solutions and help us, the city councils, to work for the educational community, that they do not abandon us," he concluded.
