Drago Canarias denounces that the Canary Islands Budgets for 2025 in terms of tourism promotion and those allocated to organizations such as Gesprotur or Promotur-Turismo Islas Canarias, as well as the items of the senior management of the Government, have increased by more than 50%, which shows the lack of commitment of the Executive with the necessary economic diversification of the Canary Islands, demanded by social movements, civil society, the scientific community and a large part of the Canary Islands business community.
On the other hand, areas such as R&D&I, the primary sector, the environment, transport, culture, education and social services, which are of vital importance for achieving quality public services, have suffered cuts; some cuts that accentuate poverty and social inequality existing in the archipelago, perpetuate public services that are far from being decent, universal and free, and favor an economic model of mass tourism that plunders the territory and the people who live in it.
As explained by the head of the Confederal Bloc of Public Policies of Drago Canarias, Luis de la Barrera, "the Canary Islands has been stagnant for years in an obsolete economic model, of low added value and highly dependent on mass tourism, and to get out of this vicious circle it is essential that tourism decreases, as well as betting on innovation and the creation of new industries", but he adds that "the Government of the Canary Islands shows once again that it has no intention of promoting our technological development and creating quality employment".
Likewise, the head of the Bloc focuses on the attitude of the Minister of Universities, Science, Innovation and Culture, whom he accuses of disinterest in the needs of professionals in the sector, and assures that "she attends sector events only to comply with the protocol, because apart from ignoring the demands of researchers, academics, entrepreneurs and creators of culture, she has cut their budgets".
In this sense, the head of the Bloc underlines the importance of "strengthening the ecosystems of innovation, culture, education and environment in the Canary Islands, to generate talent and promote the creation of companies with high added value, especially in the field of technology and digital economies", so "it is necessary to provide our research centers and universities with resources, establishing collaboration mechanisms that facilitate the transfer of knowledge to the productive fabric", he concludes.
