Ciudadanos has denounced “the lack of Local Police officers in Yaiza” and has requested the municipal government to “work firmly to create new positions”. In this regard, the Cs spokesperson in the local corporation, Bruno Medina, recalled that “the last incorporation of agents into the staff was in 2005”, that is, “not a single place has been opened in the last 15 years”.
Medina has stated that “it is very difficult to cover the entire extension of the municipality”, in addition to “the presence and correct development of police activities cannot be guaranteed with so few officers”. In this sense, he pointed out that “police and unions have been requesting the institution in recent years to announce places”, in order to “alleviate the great deficiencies they have for the development of their functions”.
“The agents have the necessary vehicles and means, but what is really lacking are police officers, that is, the most important thing to cover the ratios per inhabitant and to be able to carry out their work with security guarantees for the inhabitants and for themselves, since by population, Yaiza should have about 83 agents and currently has no more than 29 agents in general services, such as patrols, accidents, prevention or citizen requirements, and the rest of the agents are assigned to administrative tasks, technical office, notifications, etc.”, said the Cs mayor.
In this regard, he explained that “in 2018 Yaiza had 37 Local Police officers, of which only 29 plus two officers were serving”, and, as of today, “several of those agents have retired and others are about to do so”, so “police resources are greatly diminished”.
“The replacement rate allowed for this city council is 115% in the current General State Budgets”, and “in the municipality's own accounts for 2018 they budgeted 37 places plus 7 officers”, so “it is not understood that not a single place has been opened in 15 years”, Medina declared.
Likewise, he has warned that “it must be taken into account that if new places are announced, these agents would not be in service until at least two years have passed”, due to “the time of the call, training, etc.”, so “it is inadmissible that the municipal government continues without announcing places”.
For all these reasons, Ciudadanos has requested the mayor and councilor delegate of the Local Police, Óscar Noda, to “acquire a serious commitment to the incorporation of new agents”, in order to “increase the number of police officers in the municipality”.
Finally, the municipal spokesperson for Cs thanked all the agents of Yaiza “for the great work they do to guarantee security in the municipality”.
