The Lanzarote deputy of the Canarian Nationalist Group, Cristina Calero, intervenes this Tuesday in the Plenary Session of the Parliament of the Canary Islands to convey the situation experienced by the teaching staff who teach in La Graciosa, focusing on the working conditions derived from double and triple insularity.

Through a question addressed to the counselor of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports, Calero will request explanations about the measures that the autonomous Executive is considering to improve the reality of these professionals.

“Being a teacher in the Canary Islands means carrying a suitcase on your back,” points out the parliamentarian, who underlines that the territorial fragmentation of the archipelago turns the assignment of destinations into a real personal and economic challenge. The need to leave the family environment, the difficulties in reconciling, as well as the additional cost in housing and transport, are some of the problems that affect the teaching staff.

In this context, Calero places special emphasis on the situation of La Graciosa, where triple insularity further aggravates these difficulties. “Teachers cannot choose this destination and, furthermore, must bear the daily cost of maritime transport out of their own pocket, which represents a clear disadvantage compared to other destinations in the Canary Islands,” he/she denounces.

The deputy recalls that La Graciosa has been recognized as a geographically independent island, but not administratively, which directly impacts the lack of specific measures that compensate for this reality.

From the Canarian Nationalist Group, Calero vindicates the principle of “islands equal in opportunities” and demands concrete actions that allow dignifying the conditions of the teaching staff in La Graciosa.

“We want to know what measures the Department of Education contemplates to correct this inequality and ensure that practicing teaching in La Graciosa does not become an odyssey, but an option.”
