The general secretary of PSOE of Lanzarote and congresswoman, María Dolores Corujo, has communicated to the insular Executive her availability and intention to run in the party primaries to once again preside over the Cabildo of Lanzarote, an institution she led during the last legislature.
The Executive has received this decision with satisfaction and has expressed its support for Corujo, whom they consider the best candidate to lead a project that will return the Cabildo to the forefront in responding to the great challenges of Lanzarote and La Graciosa.
“It is a personal decision, but it is never made alone, and I wanted to share it with those who have accompanied me throughout this time. I have presided over the Cabildo and I know the responsibility it entails. My will is to recover an island project that places the living conditions of our population at the center of political action,” Corujo has stated.
Corujo has explained that this decision responds to the need to promote a development model that guarantees access to housing, strengthens public services, and preserves the island’s territory and resources.
“Lanzarote needs a project where accessing housing ceases to be the obstacle that today conditions the lives of so many families and young people; where public healthcare has the necessary resources to attend to the population in a timely and guaranteed manner; and where the care of our elders and the protection of our territory are effective priorities of the institutions,” she has declared.
Corujo has argued that the Cabildo must assume the political and institutional leadership that corresponds to it to guide the future of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, with a plan that links the island’s development to the improvement of its population’s living conditions. This implies promoting solutions within its own competencies, working with the town councils, and demanding that the Government of the Canary Islands respond to the needs of the citizens.
“Presiding over the Cabildo requires setting a course, planning, and making decisions. It requires acting on problems and demanding that each administration fulfill its responsibilities. Housing, healthcare, water supply, or pressure on the territory directly affect the lives of our people and must determine the agenda of those who govern,” she has affirmed.
The Secretary General has set her purpose as continuing and developing the project initiated during her time at the head of the institution. “During the last legislature, we launched a project with clear priorities, even in extraordinarily difficult circumstances. My intention is to regain that course and respond to current challenges, with an island model in which the wealth generated translates into well-being and opportunities for those who live here.”
Corujo has thanked the Executive for their support and has specified that this announcement expresses her availability and intention to participate in the primaries. The presentation of pre-candidacies is scheduled for October 23 and it will be at the corresponding time when the steps established by the party to formalize it will be taken, with full respect for the procedure and the decision of the membership.
“I am taking this step with the determination to work for a Lanzarote and a La Graciosa with solid public services, a protected territory, and a future that its population can build here. That is the project I want to lead and for which, when the time comes, I will ask for the confidence of the membership,” she concluded.
