The construction of 60 new niches in the San Román cemetery in Arrecife "is progressing at a good pace", as the Arrecife City Council announced this Wednesday, which is immersed in the work.
The works are being carried out by Lanzabloques Tinajo S.L, the awarded company, with a budget of "68,000 euros" and with the forecast that they will be completed in an approximate period of "two months".
The initiative is based on the "need for new burial spaces", as the occupation of the niches enabled after the extensions carried out in 2019 and 2021 is advanced. “The municipal cemetery has become too small for the population of Arrecife. With these new niches we cover part of the needs we have at the moment, but it is not enough, we are waiting to increase the surface area”, said Lemes, who went to the Arrecife cemetery this Monday to check the progress of the works, accompanied by the Councilor of the Technical Office, the Area responsible for the project, Maciot Cabrera.
On the other hand, it should be remembered that due to the imperative need to expand the San Román Cemetery, the capital's plenary session approved initiating the "procedure for a minor modification of the municipal plan", to extend it naturally towards the plot that borders it to the west; an area of just over 5,500 square meters.
To this end, it was urged to categorize the strip parallel to the cemetery as 'Rustic Land for Infrastructure and Equipment Protection', currently categorized as 'Rustic Land for Protection'.
In addition, the Health Department is also working on a "beautification project". “I am confident that with all these works we can finally have a cemetery in accordance with the needs of Arrecife”.
