The Coalición Canaria (CC) Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote has registered a motion to be debated in the next plenary session of the corporation, in which it proposes the promotion and definitive regulation of the TaxiLanzarote.net system as a key technological tool to modernize the taxi service on the island, improve its operability and protect employment in the sector.
According to the formation, "the motion highlights the strategic importance of the taxi as an essential public service for residents and tourists, while recognizing the historical difficulties facing the sector, such as operational fragmentation, regulatory inequality between municipalities and the growing unfair competition from VTC platforms."
“The taxi sector in Lanzarote has always been a pillar of island mobility. But we cannot allow it to continue to be hampered by the lack of coordination or technological backwardness. TaxiLanzarote.net is a tool for the future that unifies, digitizes and dignifies this activity”, said the spokesperson for Coalición Canaria in the Cabildo, Samuel Martín.
The nationalist proposal recalls that the Cabildo, within the framework of its powers recognized in Law 13/2007 on the Regulation of Road Transport in the Canary Islands, has already initiated the procedure to approve the regulation that regulates TaxiLanzarote.net. This platform will allow the automated assignment of services, electronic payment, interoperability between municipalities and a more equitable distribution of work among taxi professionals.
A more modern, fair and efficient public transport
“With this motion we want to strengthen the Cabildo's commitment to the deployment of this system and also ask the town councils to join in a voluntary and coordinated manner. In addition, we urge the Government of the Canary Islands to support the project with financing, technical assistance and recognition of the island's management model”, explained Samuel Martín.
The political party in the Government argues that "the effective implementation of TaxiLanzarote.net will not only improve the user experience, but will guarantee fairer working conditions for taxi drivers, reduce waiting times and strengthen the sustainability of public transport in the face of unfair competition from other operators."
“This system is not just a technological application: it is a real opportunity to protect local employment, provide a more efficient and transparent service, and ensure that taxis remain a quality alternative in Lanzarote's mobility”, concluded the nationalist spokesperson.
Coalición Canaria believes that this measure "should be addressed urgently and with consensus between administrations, as part of a strategic commitment to a more modern, fair and efficient public transport in Lanzarote."
