The municipal government of Tías, headed by the Socialist Party (PSOE), approved this Wednesday the III Modernization Plan of Puerto del Carmen, a proposal that "from its beginnings has been marked by improvisation, lack of transparency and a clear attempt to benefit private interests to the detriment of the general interest," says CC.

This was underlined by the spokesperson for the Canarian Coalition in the southern Consistory, Amado Vizcaíno, who denounces "the hypocrisy of the Socialist Party (PSOE) in matters of urban planning and tourism management, accusing it of maintaining a double discourse according to its political interests".

Vizcaíno recalls that the III Modernization Plan of Puerto del Carmen had to be modified after the warning from the Cabildo of Lanzarote due to an excess of almost 1,500 tourist beds. "From the moment the document reached the Cabildo, it was detected that the City Council intended to exceed the permitted number of accommodation places, and thanks to the work of Tourism Planning, this disproportion was corrected," says the councillor.

The nationalist spokesperson underlines "the incoherence of the PSOE, which in the Cabildo criticizes tourism growth while in Tías it promotes initiatives that increase accommodation capacity and sacrifice public spaces in favor of private interests".

Thus, he has questioned "the socialists' determination to recover and put on the market 6,425 beds, while at the same time eliminating residential land from the town of La Tiñosa to convert it into land compatible with tourist use".

"I don't understand what the PSOE intends. On the one hand, they put more tourist places into circulation and, on the other, they eliminate residential land in La Tiñosa, making it impossible for more residents to live there. And meanwhile, in Matagorda, where many families reside, they continue to maintain it as tourist land, prohibiting residential use. What do they want? Do they want them to leave? The whole plan is crazy," criticizes Vizcaíno.

"Another of the most obvious examples of this absurdity is the transformation of a plot of land destined for public parking into the construction of a hotel of up to four floors because they not only exceeded the number of tourist beds allowed, but also changed the land use of a key space for the municipality, directly affecting the residents," he laments.

"It is a clear example of the hypocrisy of the PSOE. While in the Cabildo they falsely accuse the Canarian Coalition of favoring private interests, in Tías they promote projects that sacrifice public land for the benefit of large tourism developers," emphasizes the CC spokesperson.

Vizcaíno emphasizes that the Canarian Coalition "continues to bet on responsible and sustainable tourism development, where the needs of residents are prioritized and territorial planning is respected". In this sense, the councillor values the work of Jesús Machín, councillor for Territorial Planning of the Cabildo, whose "work has allowed to increase the protected area from 42% to 60% and reduce tourist land by 104,000 square meters".

"The PSOE must stop confusing citizens with contradictory speeches and start working with coherence and responsibility. You cannot preach one thing in the Cabildo and do the opposite in the town councils," he concludes.
