The low-cost airline EasyJet has reached an agreement with SpaceX to equip its fleet of aircraft with the satellite connectivity service Starlink. The move will mean the introduction of onboard wifi internet for the first time in the history of the British company, as announced this Tuesday by the company.
The deployment of this technology will begin during the first half of 2027 and will be applied progressively to the Airbus A320, A320neo, and A321neo models in its fleet. The company's forecast contemplates that the entire installation process will be completed by the beginning of 2028.
Through the low Earth orbit satellite network operated by Starlink, passengers will be able to browse the internet, access streaming video platforms, participate in online video games, and work from their own devices with speeds and latency similar to terrestrial connections.
Likewise, air connectivity will allow users to check the status of their journeys in real time through the airline's mobile app or website, access weather and transport information at the destination, and manage onboard menu orders from their seats.
The chief executive of easyJet, Kenton Jarvis, has highlighted that this alliance seeks to respond to the demands of both leisure tourism and the corporate travel segment, improving the service offering for the approximately 100 million travelers that the company transports annually.
For her part, the president and chief operating officer of SpaceX, Gwynne Shotwell, has pointed out that the system will guarantee uninterrupted connection during all phases of flights.
