Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Arrecife this Saturday to participate in the demonstration called by the Marea Blanca platform in defense of public healthcare and to show their rejection of the possible closure of the Insular Hospital of Lanzarote.
The march, whose official number of attendees has not yet been provided by the organization or the authorities, started at 11:00 AM from Parque Islas Canarias and traveled along the Marítima avenue of the Lanzarote capital until reaching the Insular Hospital, where a manifesto is scheduled to be read.
The demonstration was led by Dr. Domingo Guzmán, former manager of the Insular Hospital, accompanied by other active doctors from the health center. At the front of the procession, they carried a banner with the slogan: “For dignified public healthcare. For the Insular Hospital of Lanzarote. Healthcare is a right, not a business.”
During the route, numerous banners and protest signs were seen in defense of this emblematic health center. Among the most repeated messages were: “The Insular Hospital needs guarantees of reform, not closure” and “Insular Hospital, 75 years of history on the island of Lanzarote.”
The protest is taking place in a demanding atmosphere and has counted on the participation of citizens, healthcare professionals, patients, and representatives of different social groups and political parties, united to demand the maintenance and strengthening of public healthcare on the island.
The reading of the manifesto will put the finishing touch to a mobilization that seeks to make visible the concern existing among broad sectors of Lanzarote society about the future of the Insular Hospital.
