Caraballo denounces that Lanzarote is relegated to fifth place in the Canary Islands Budgets

The deputy and candidate for the presidency of the Cabildo denounces that the island loses 37.5% of its investment capacity and criticizes that there are no specific funds to reform the Insular Hospital or to build public housing.

The deputy and candidate for the presidency of the Cabildo by Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-BC), Yoné Caraballo, has denounced today at a press conference the "budgetary mistreatment" by the Government of the Canary Islands of Coalición Canaria (CC) and Partido Popular (PP) towards Lanzarote and La Graciosa in the project of General Budgets of the Canary Islands for 2027. These regional accounts once again mistreat the people of Lanzarote, drastically cut investments, and leave the most important social and health problems unanswered.

For Caraballo, the data is conclusive. Lanzarote and La Graciosa go from 147.19 million euros in islandized investments in 2026 to 92.01 million in 2027. That is, 55.19 million less, a decrease of 37.5%, the largest percentage cut in the Canary Islands. Furthermore, the island falls from third to fifth place in investment by island.

"While the Clavijo Government boasts of historic figures and economic growth, Lanzarote loses more than 55 million euros in investments. It is absolutely unjustifiable that an island that bears enormous tourist and population growth pressure, and that needs to strengthen its public services, receives this treatment," Caraballo stated.

No allocation for the reform of the Insular Hospital

One of the most serious examples of this neglect is the absence of a specific allocation to undertake the comprehensive reform of the Insular Hospital of Lanzarote. The budget project also does not establish a concrete economic commitment or a timeline that guarantees its rehabilitation.

"The Insular Hospital is an essential infrastructure for Lanzarote and cannot continue to live on promises. We have been demanding a comprehensive reform and a firm commitment to its future for years. Fernando Clavijo and Oswaldo Betancort continue to provide no response to the professionals, users, and families who need to know what will happen to our hospital," Caraballo denounced.

Added to this situation is the lack of specific investments for pending health actions, such as the health centers of Argana Alta, Playa Honda, and Mala, as well as health needs in Haría.

Not a euro for public housing

Housing, one of the main social problems in Lanzarote and the Canary Islands, also finds no sufficient response in the regional accounts. The 2027 budget fails to include the specific allocation for the construction of public housing that was included in previous years.

In 2026, 5.51 million euros were contemplated for the construction of public housing, in addition to 6.65 million for neighborhood rehabilitation and 4.65 million for rehabilitation aid. These lines cease to appear with these designations in the new project.

Although a contribution from the Government of Spain of 9.3 million euros for housing programs is reflected, Caraballo warns that this amount does not specify how many homes will be built in Lanzarote, where they will be located, or when they will be available.

“Housing is an emergency on our island. Our young people and working families cannot continue to wait while prices skyrocket and accessing a home becomes a privilege. We do not want announcements or generic allocations; the people of Lanzarote want to know how many public homes will be built, where, and when,” states Yoné Caraballo.

Lanzarote contributes, but receives less and less

The deputy continues by considering that these budgets demonstrate “the lack of territorial justice of a Government that does not address the needs of an island that endures enormous tourist and population pressure, and on its infrastructures and public services.”

He also questions that road projects such as the Yaiza-Arrecife highway and its ring road accumulate budget allocations year after year without the actions materializing, demanding greater execution and real commitments.

“These budgets have many figures and propaganda, but very few answers to the real problems of our people. Lanzarote needs housing, a strong healthcare system, investments, and services commensurate with what it deserves. We cannot accept that the island that contributes the most continues to be one of the most punished by the Government of the Canary Islands,” Caraballo concluded.
