Caraballo accuses the CC Government of "suffocating" Lanzarote families

The candidate of Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista (NC-BC) for the Presidency of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Yoné Caraballo, has accused the Government of the Canary Islands of Coalición Canaria (CC) of "suffocating Lanzarotean families with its passivity in the face of a cost of living increase that continues to accelerate".

Caraballo points out that inflation continues to put pressure on families' pockets. The CPI reached 4.3% year-on-year in August, the highest rate since February 2023 when the war in Ukraine broke out, and in a context marked by the increase in fuel prices and other energy costs.

"Every week, grocery shopping costs more and filling the tank does too, but the Government of the Canary Islands seems to live in another reality. Lanzarotean families have to pay more for the basics while CC stands idly by," denounces Caraballo.

The NC-bc candidate considers the fuel situation in Lanzarote to be particularly serious. The Government of the Canary Islands maintains an extraordinary bonus of 20 cents per liter in La Gomera and 15 cents in El Hierro and La Palma, while Lanzarote continues to receive none.

"There cannot be first-class and second-class Canary Islanders depending on the island they live on. Lanzarote also bears transport surcharges, it also has an island economy dependent on fuel, and it also has families who need to make ends meet. The Government of the Canary Islands must explain why it continues to discriminate against us and suffocate us," says Caraballo.

For Yoné Caraballo, the problem is not limited to fuel. "The shopping basket has become one of the main economic problems for families, and this Government of the Canary Islands has done nothing to stop it."

The candidate recalls that the current president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, came to government promising measures to alleviate the cost of living and improve families' economies, but considers that "the reality is that the promises have turned into lies while prices continue to rise."

“They have had time, competencies, and record revenue. What they have not had is political will. When it comes to protecting the pockets of the majority of Canary families, this Government always arrives late,” states Caraballo, who contrasts it with “the speed with which they lowered taxes for 0.3% of the population, the richest in the Canary Islands, two months after the May 2023 elections.”

“Lanzarote families need a Cabildo that defends them”

The NC-bc candidate believes that the situation demonstrates the need for Lanzarote to have its own strong political voice before the Government of the Canary Islands.

Caraballo calls on the Cabildo to abandon its position as a “mere spectator” and exercise its competencies to defend the people of Lanzarote before the Government of the Canary Islands.

“We cannot accept that while Lanzarote endures increasing tourist and territorial pressure, its residents have to pay more to live, travel, and fill their refrigerators. Recovering Lanzarote also means recovering the ability of families to live with dignity on their own island,” he concludes.
