The Joint Commission Catholic Church–Public Administrations of the Canary Islands authorizes the restoration of 21 assets property of the Diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna and eight assets of the Diocese of Canarias ranging from sculptures, paintings, carpentry, silverware, and foundry to architectural works, for an approximate amount of 1,049,593.19 euros. The approval of these proposals took place at the first permanent session of the year 2026
It should be recalled that the Joint Commission is made up of technical and political representatives from the Government of the Canary Islands, island councils, the Canary Federation of Municipalities (FECAN), and both dioceses. It is a coordination and supervision body for the correct management of ecclesiastical heritage, which represents 25% of the Assets of Cultural Interest (BIC) in the archipelago.
According to the agenda, four temporary exhibition projects were evaluated, three in Tenerife and one in Gran Canaria, which were validated by the members of the Joint Commission for their presentation throughout 2026
Now then, the central point of the meeting was the restoration projects. In total, 29 interventions were approved, although some of the actions are conditional on the resolution of the corrections indicated by the technical team of the Directorate General of Culture and Cultural Heritage.
Diocese of San Cristóbal
The Diocese of San Cristóbal has authorization to intervene nineteen movable assets distributed throughout Tenerife, specifically in the Church of San Agustín (La Orotava), the Parish of San Marcos Evangelista and the Hermitage of El Calvario (Icod de los Vinos), the Parish of San Juan Bautista (Guía de Isora), the Parish of San Francisco de Asís (Santa Cruz de Tenerife), the Cathedral of La Laguna, the Parish of Santa Ana (La Laguna), the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción and the Hermitage of San Benito (Los Realejos), the Parish of Santa Ana (Garachico) and the municipal cemetery of GüímarRegarding La Palma, the rehabilitation of the tower of the Parish Church of El Salvador (Santa Cruz de La Palma) and the restoration of the sculpture of the Virgin of the Hermitage of Bonanza (El Paso) were approved. The total amount of the interventions in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife would amount to 824,777.52 euros
Diocese of the Canary Islands
In Gran Canaria , the green light was given to the restoration projects of four movable assets, specifically sculptures belonging to the Parish of Santiago Apóstol (Gáldar), the Parish of San Agustín (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), the Parish of San Sebastián (Agüimes), and the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pino (Teror). In addition to two interventions for the consolidation and restoration of the north facade of the Cathedral of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Furthermore, in Lanzarote the restoration of two assets was approved, on the one hand, the bells of the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows (Tinajo) and on the other, the rehabilitation of the Hermitage of San Juan Bautista de Soo (Teguise). This is an approximate amount of 224,815.67 euros in restoration projects promoted by the Diocese of the Canary IslandsWith these preliminary agreements, the Government of the Canary Islands guarantees the recovery and protection of the archipelago's historical legacy within the framework of collaboration and coordination provided for in Law 11/2019, of April 25, on Cultural Heritage of the Canary Islands
