More than a thousand days after the start of the current term, the new public bus service for Lanzarote is still not operational. Faced with this situation, the deputy for Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Marcos Bergaz (PSOE), has called on the Government of the Canary Islands to get involved and collaborate with the Cabildo to move forward with the tender.
Bergaz conveyed this request during the last Commission on Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Parliament of the Canary Islands, on the occasion of the appearance of the minister of the area, Pablo Rodríguez (CC), to address the future Sustainable Mobility Law of the Canary Islands.
“There was talk of a revolution in public transport in Lanzarote, and more than a thousand days of the Canary Islands Coalition and People's Party government have passed, and we are still waiting. That is why I ask you to get involved and lend a hand to unblock the situation,” he stated.
The socialist deputy believes that the regional executive can contribute, within its powers, to overcoming the difficulties affecting the processing of the new contract, through technical, legal, or economic support.
“The Government of the Canary Islands must lend a hand when a project of this nature encounters difficulties. If technical, legal, or economic collaboration is needed, it must be provided. What we cannot do is continue waiting indefinitely,” he affirmed.
Bergaz also linked the need to improve the service with the increase in demand recorded in recent years. According to the data provided by the deputy, the number of public transport passengers in Lanzarote has gone from around five million to more than eight million in 2025.
“The free service, implemented during the presidencies of Ángel Víctor Torres and Loli Corujo, has shown that people want to use public transport. Now we have to ensure that the service is up to par: that there are sufficient frequencies, punctuality, capacity, and greater connectivity,” he maintained.
For Bergaz, the new tender must allow the offer to be adapted to this growing demand, improve the frequencies, capacity, and connectivity of the network, and ensure that the service reaches all towns on the island.
“We are facing the end of this term, it is time to overcome the obstacles, excuses, and delays, and ensure that the new service, so in demand, becomes a reality,” he concluded.
