Red Cross has since this Friday, May 8, a street and square in Tías, an institutional and citizen tribute to the humanitarian and solidarity trajectory of this organization coinciding with the celebration of World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.
The event was presided over by the mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz Saavedra, accompanied by the special delegate for the Red Cross in the Canary Islands, Isaac Díaz Sosa, the first deputy mayor, Nicolás Saavedra, and the president of the Red Cross in Lanzarote, Raquel Galindo.
Also attending were the Councilor for Gardens, Carmen Gloria Rodríguez, along with her colleagues from the governing group, municipal representatives, volunteers from the Red Cross, residents of the area, and citizens in general.
During his speech, José Juan Cruz said that this act "has a profound institutional, social, and human significance for our municipality" and explained that the new designation of this public space "is, above all, an act of public and permanent recognition" towards people who dedicate their time and effort to helping others.
The mayor also recalled that solidarity, closeness, and hope are values that identify both the Red Cross and the municipality of Tías. Cruz Saavedra especially thanked Isaac Díaz Sosa for his presence and work, as well as the daily work of the Red Cross volunteers and technical staff, “true protagonists of this story of everyday solidarity”.

For his part, Isaac Díaz Sosa expressed, on behalf of the Red Cross in the Canary Islands, his "most sincere gratitude" to the Tías City Council and all citizens for this recognition, which they receive "with humility and with a great sense of responsibility".
He pointed out that this tribute is not only directed at the institution, but also "at the people who make it possible every day: volunteers, technical staff, male and female members, and all those people committed to solidarity".
The special delegate recalled that the Red Cross was born to "prevent and alleviate human suffering without any discrimination" and highlighted the work that the organization carries out in Lanzarote and the Canary Islands, both in emergencies and in areas such as unwanted loneliness, social exclusion, or support for the most vulnerable people.
During the event, the work of the Red Cross volunteers in Lanzarote and in the municipality of Tías was especially valued, recognizing their dedication over the years. After the institutional interventions, the authorities proceeded to unveil the commemorative plaque of the new Red Cross square.
