The PSOE of Arrecife denounces a "new windfall" by Coalición Canaria in the La Concha neighborhood, with a total of 348 new homes. According to the socialists, this is "an operation that, added to the 521 homes planned in Playa del Cable, would bring the number of new properties between both areas to 869, increasing the pressure on infrastructure. The question we in the PSOE ask ourselves is where all that sewage is going to end up, when between La Concha and El Cable we put about 3000 more people."
"It is no coincidence that the Maneje homes, public housing, have slowed down in the first 200 and that the start of the work for the other 200 has been boycotted. They are slowing down the construction of public housing to benefit private windfalls of houses for the rich, and with it they are destroying the infrastructure and the territory," states Duque.
For the PSOE, the issue is not just how many homes are built, but the future of Arrecife. These homes at that price are not for the citizens of the capital; they are for people from other countries to come and live in Lanzarote or to be used as tourist accommodation. "Maciot Cabrera knows that these windfalls he is signing not only do not solve the problem, but they worsen it," comments Cristina. The city already has minimal services that cannot handle this growth without destroying the existing infrastructure. Sewage spills, water outages, sewers that overflow with a little rain, and they still want to bring more people from outside, leaving residents without homes.
Homes over 3,500 euros per square meter.
The socialists warn that the development planned in La Concha has an average price exceeding 3,500 euros per square meter. Amounts that are beyond the reach of citizens.
"While there are young people who cannot become independent and families who have enormous difficulties accessing housing, the focus remains on private developments with prohibitive prices, slowing down the promotion of public housing," questions the socialist spokesperson.
869 new homes in two linear kilometers
Each home represents an additional demand for water, electricity, sanitation, waste collection, and mobility. The concern about spills and sanitation, which already closes the Reducto beach month after month, will be a joke with what is coming. Not to mention traffic, water outages, schools, etc.
Who will be able to live in these homes?
“We are talking about hundreds of homes that could exceed 3,500 euros per square meter. We all know that these houses will be sold either for vacation homes or to foreigners who decide to live on the island, it not only does not solve the problem, but it overcrowds” comments Cristina Duque.
The PSOE of Arrecife insists that the city needs a housing policy that prioritizes access to decent housing, the construction of public housing, and the protection of the territory, instead of urban development deals to continue overcrowding the city. Creating developments for thousands of people who dump their sewage into the sea, who collapse the roads, to continue benefiting a few is a punishment for this city.
