The Arrecife City Council has decreed this Monday, April 8, the suspension of all outdoor activities linked to municipal facilities or public spaces in the capital of Lanzarote. The suspension, decreed by the city's mayor, Yonathan de León, is based on the orange alert (risks) issued by AEMET and the General Directorate of Justice and Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands, which foresees strong winds in all the Canary Islands. On the island of Lanzarote, wind gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour may be recorded.
As a prevention, the capital's mayor has also decreed the activation of the PEMU (Municipal Emergency Plan), which allows the coordination and full availability of all municipal personnel.
According to this PEMU, with a specific article for Arrecife, as a city with a population of more than 50,000 inhabitants (the capital of Lanzarote is approaching 69,000), the mayor is directly responsible and the head of Coordination of Civil Protection Arrecife will be the technician.
The Government of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of Emergencies, declares a wind alert situation for all the islands, starting on the night of this Monday, April 8. This decision is made taking into account the information provided by the State Meteorological Agency and other available sources, and in application of the Specific Emergency Plan of the Canary Islands for Risks of Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA).
General wind from the north and northeast is expected with an average variable speed of 20 to 50 kilometers per hour, with areas of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour, on the islands with greater relief, and 30 to 60 kilometers per hour in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Probable maximum gusts are expected to reach and exceed 60 to 90 kilometers per hour.
The municipal decree of Arrecife establishes the suspension of outdoor activities from 00 hours on Tuesday, April 9, and throughout the day.
Mayor Yonathan de León, directly responsible for the Local Police, and the Councilor for Emergencies and Security, Kevin Cortés, to which the Civil Protection Corps of Arrecife is attached, calls on the population to directly monitor the official information established through the authorities and the media.
