The Department of Culture of the Arrecife City Council, led by Abigail González, is launching the project Con fundamento (With Foundation), an initiative aimed at the municipality's Early Childhood and Primary Education centers (CEIP) and the Argana Compulsory Education Center (CEO) with the aim of promoting knowledge, appreciation, and correct use of traditional Canarian clothing in popular celebrations such as pilgrimages.

This project arises from the need to preserve and transmit the intangible cultural heritage linked to traditional clothing, in the face of a growing trivialization and inappropriate use that distorts its historical and symbolic meaning.

Con fundamento will take place from May 16 to 23, 2025, in the ten public schools of Arrecife, with a program coordinated between the management teams, the teaching staff, and the Department of Culture. The sessions will consist of educational talks with visual support and didactic materials, designed to offer students a deep understanding of the traditional Canarian costume: its origin, evolution, function, and variants according to the island and the context.

In addition to explaining the history and diversity of clothing, common mistakes and myths about typical costumes will be analyzed, fostering spaces for reflection on the value of traditions. The objective is to raise awareness among the new generations about the importance of dressing with respect and historical coherence, and to promote cultural pride and a sense of belonging.

Councilor Abigail González has stressed that "education is the most powerful tool to ensure that our traditions are preserved with authenticity and respect. With this project, we want to sow awareness from an early age to strengthen the cultural identity of Arrecife and the entire Canary Islands."
