The Arrecife City Council will expand the resources allocated to street cleaning and the collection of urban solid waste to adapt the service to the city's growth, population increase, and the expansion of its built-up area. The measure, approved this Friday, October 30, by the municipal plenary session, will allow for reinforcing human and material resources and improving response capacity to the municipality's current needs.

The Councilor for Cleaning, Jacobo Lemes, has highlighted the importance of this expansion, which will become operational in the coming weeks. “Arrecife has changed a lot since the current service was designed, and we need the cleaning and waste collection resources to be up to par with the city we have today. This expansion is an important step to improve the service we provide to our residents and to respond to needs that have long highlighted the limitations of available resources.”

The original contract, awarded in 2014, was designed for a city of approximately 50,000 inhabitants. Since then, the municipality's growth and the increase in generated waste have made it necessary to review the available resources. The technical report supporting the expansion warns of the difficulties in servicing certain streets and areas with current resources, as well as the increase in situations where furniture, belongings, and other bulky items are abandoned in the street.

More staff and machinery to reinforce the service

The expansion includes the incorporation of human resources and machinery for both street cleaning and waste collection. The economic proposal includes personnel with the profiles of laborers and drivers, in addition to specific material resources to reinforce the tasks carried out in the city.

Among the machinery contemplated are a high-pressure washer, open-box trucks, a street sweeper, and waste collection vehicles with side and rear loading. These resources will allow for an increase in the service's operational capacity and provide more resources to meet the cleaning and collection needs that Arrecife currently presents.

The expansion thus responds to a specific need: to adapt the service's resources to the current dimensions and demands of the city, improving its capacity to act both in cleaning public spaces and in waste removal.

Jacobo Lemes has stressed that “we cannot continue to meet Arrecife's current needs with a medium-term plan that was made for the city of twelve years ago. We need more human and material resources so that the service can respond better, reach where it currently faces difficulties, and handle the volume of waste generated by the municipality”.

An improvement while the new contract is processed

The expansion is incorporated into the service currently provided by Urbaser, whose continuity was agreed upon by the Local Government Board starting August 1, 2026, once the previous contract concluded. This temporary solution will allow for the reinforcement of resources while the City Council continues processing the new street cleaning and waste collection contract, with the aim of completing the procedure and having a new contract.

The economic proposal includes a monthly increase of 127,393.16 euros to cover the costs of the new human and material resources: 21,977.40 euros corresponding to the expansion of street cleaning and 105,415.76 euros allocated to the collection of urban solid waste.

The goal is for this improvement to begin to translate into a greater capacity for action in the streets of Arrecife in the coming weeks, responding to the current needs of the city and reinforcing an essential service for the quality of life of the citizens.
