The deputy mayor of Arrecife, Echedey Eugenio - acting mayor - announces that at 11 a.m. this Friday, December 12, the City Council has proceeded to activate the Municipal Emergency Plan (PEMU), which will entail the suspension of all scheduled municipal events - both indoors and outdoors - and the closure of all municipal facilities from 5 p.m. this afternoon until further notice.
The activation of the PEMU has been carried out based on communications issued by the Directorate General of Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government and the State Meteorological Agency, which have led to the declaration of an alert in the Archipelago due to coastal phenomena, with forecasts of strong waves, wind, and rain in the coming hours.
"We are adopting these measures out of prudence, following the recommendations of the competent bodies and under one principle: people's safety is a priority," Echedey Eugenio emphasizes, while also announcing that the new dates for the suspended events will be announced in the coming days.
“Protecting the citizenry”
In this regard, the acting mayor of Arrecife recalls that the municipality has areas particularly sensitive to flooding, making it essential to "be proactive, protect citizens, and ensure the coordination of all municipal services," in accordance with the recommendations contained in the Canary Islands Specific Emergency Plan (PEFMA) and the Lanzarote Insular Emergency Plan (PEIN).
The activation of the Municipal Emergency Plan implies that all municipal departments, especially those related to safety and emergency response, will implement prevention, surveillance, and response measures, including beach surveillance, promenade control, risk zone signage, monitoring of infrastructure and urban furniture, and permanent communication to citizens through official channels.
The Municipal Coordination Center (CECOPAL) will be set up at the Arrecife Local Police Headquarters, from where the necessary resources and actions will be coordinated. The City Council reminds the public of the importance of following official recommendations regarding rain, wind, storms, and coastal phenomena, exercising extreme caution, and staying informed through institutional channels.
